November 6, 1860
Abraham Lincoln, candidate of the anti-slavery Republican party, is elected president.
February 4, 1861
Delegates from a group of seceded states elect Jefferson Davis as president of the Confederate States of America in Montgomery, AL.
April 12-13, 1861
In the first military engagement of the war, Confederate troops attack Fort Sumter, a Union outpost in Charleston, SC’s harbor. The fort surrenders on the 13th.
July 21, 1861
The first Battle of Bull Run erupts in northern Virginia, ending in a win for the Confederates.
March 9, 1862
The first battle of ironclad warships ensues. While the Union Navy blocks 3,500 miles of Confederate coastline, runners have significant success breaching the blockade.
April 6-7, 1862
Devastating battle rages at Shiloh in southwestern Tennessee. Union troops come back from near defeat to claim victory but both sides suffer severe casualties.
September 17, 1862
The battle at Antietam in Maryland is considered a Union victory and is also known as the single bloodiest day of the war.
January 1, 1863
President Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation wherein “all persons held as slaves…are and henceforth shall be free.”
July 1-3, 18-63
An epic battle erupts in Gettysburg, PA. At its end, Confederate General Robert E. Lee withdraws and begins a defensive campaign.
July 4, 1863
Confederates surrender Vicksburg, a stronghold on the Mississippi, to Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
September 2, 1864
General William T. Sherman captures Atlanta.
November 15-December 21, 1864
Sherman’s troops leave Atlanta on their pivotal scorched earth campaign, ending in victory by capturing Savannah, GA.
April 9, 1865
Confederate General Lee surrenders to Union General Grant at the Appomattox court house in Virginia.
